Who is this course for?

  • Complete beginners

    This course is for anyone who would like to learn piano from scratch. You don't need any prior knowledge going into this, and you don't need to know how to read music. We assume you know nothing! Best suited for ages 13+.

  • Lapsed Pianists

Amy's Experience

  • Qualifications

    Bachelor of Music (1st Class Honours) from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Associate Diploma of Piano Performance (AmusA). Studied Film Music at New York University and Orchestration at Berklee.

  • Teaching Experience

    Over 18 years' piano teaching experience, both in-person and online. Taught privately, in primary and secondary schools, lecturerd in universities and at workshops and industry events.

  • Awards

    Australian Academy Award (AACTA) nominated composer for writing the music for James Cameron's 3D Documentary, "Deepsea Challenge".


Amy Jørgensen (previously Bastow) is the Founder + Head Teacher at Virtual Piano Academy.

Amy is also an award-winning Australian film music composer and pianist. She has written music for a number of successful TV shows with all the major Australian networks (Channel Seven, Ten, ABC, SBS and Nine) including Bluey, Home + Away and Winners + Losers. Amy has worked internationally on a number of projects, and has even worked with Hollywood film maker James Cameron (Dir. Titanic, Avatar), for which she was nominated for an Australian Academy Award (AACTA).

Amy is also a dedicated and experienced music educator, having taught at some of Australia's most prestigious universities and schools including The University of Sydney, Monash University, St Andrew's Cathedral School and Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School

Amy has a First Class Honours Degree in music from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music; has studied music composition in New York City at New York University); Orchestration at Berklee College of Music and holds an Associate Diploma of Piano (AmusA) from the Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB).

Amy’s unique style and warm personality make her a highly sought-after and much-loved teacher. Growing up in a small rural town with limited access to music resources and having to fight hard to pursue her musical aspirations, Amy is determined to pass on her knowledge, skills and industry experience to other aspiring musicians.

  • How much does this course cost?

    This course is a one-time payment of $19.99. You receive life-time access to this course once purchased, and can revisit it as many times as you like :) All our courses are in Australian dollars. You can still take this course and pay with an international credit card/debit card in any currency. All international payments (from those who live outside of Australia and who don't have an Australian bank account) will be converted from your local currency to Australian dollars at the conversion rate on the day of your transfer. This will obviously affect the amount you pay in your local currency. You will see the name "VIRTUAL PIANO ACADEMY" on all your bank statements, so you know which payments you have made to us. International payments may incur a currency conversion fee, which will depend entirely on your bank and their specific international conversion fees. It's usually only a small fee. If you're worried about this, contact your local bank to find out what they are charging you for currency conversion.

  • Do I need to have a piano/keyboard to take this course?

    Yes! Ideally, you'll have a full size (88 notes) piano or keyboard with weighted keys (keys that play louder/softer depending on how hard you press the notes). However, if you have a smaller keyboard and/or don't have weighted keys, you are still able to take the course and get started on your journey as a piano player.

  • Can I get a refund once enrolled in the course?

    We don't provide refunds for this course if you change your mind. We only provide refunds for technical issues or if you're unable to use or access the course after enrolling. We've unlocked a couple of lessons so you can preview some of the course lessons before purchasing, to try it out first.

  • Who is this course for?

    This course is for anyone who would like to learn piano from scratch. It's aimed at complete beginners! You don't need any prior knowledge going into this, and you don't need to know how to read music. Best suited to ages 13+.

  • How long does the course take?

    We've divided the course up into 7 days worth of material and practice activities, but you can take the lessons at your own pace if you prefer. We recommend taking the lessons in order, as each lesson builds on what you learned in the previous activity.

  • What can I expect to get from this course?

    By the end of this course, you will be comfortable reading basic piano music. You'll also know how to navigate your way around the piano, what all the white notes are, how to sit at the piano, how to read rhythm notation, how to play with changes in dynamics and articulations and how to play with a backing track.
